Senior Information

Are you older than 65? You may be if you’re reading this. You may already be aware of some of these facts, but others may be new to you. You have likely witnessed some of these things in your own life, regardless of your current health.

Most likely, you’re happier than most people.
According to a Gallup poll, after the age of fifty, people become considerably happier. Seventy percent of adults over 65 say they feel relaxed most of the time, according to another Merrill Lynch survey. In contrast, just 41% of respondents between the ages of 25 and 34 report feeling calm frequently.

Unmarried Women
Older men are more likely to be married (70%) than older women (48%).

The proportion of women over 65 is 23% higher than that of men. In other words, there are 51% more women than men over 85.

These figures show that older women are more likely to live alone, but older men are more likely to live with a partner. Out of all the older persons in the neighborhood, 27% live alone and 61% share a home with their spouse or partner. The percentage of seniors living in nursing facilities is just 3.6%.

Elderly People Sweat Less
At least under our arms, we sweat less and don’t need to control body odor as we age because our sweat glands atrophy. As we age, our sweat glands also become less sensitive to heat.

Your Teeth Are Less Sensitive
As you get older, more dentin—the hard tissue that lies between enamel and nerves—forms inside your teeth. This creates a barrier between the nerves in your teeth, reducing their sensitivity to heat and cold.

Women May Quit Experiencing Migraines
Women who have always experienced migraine headaches due to hormonal fluctuations can relate to this. Women report having over 67% fewer headaches after menopause, which is a significant decrease in migraines. However, you can be in trouble if you’re a man who suffers from migraines.

You Get Colds Less Frequently
We get immune to a lot more viruses by the time we reach middle age. You might catch a cold twice a year as a senior, or perhaps four times. For a child, that is far less than six to eight times annually.

Seniors Enjoy Movies, TV, and Social Media
On Facebook, the fastest-growing age category is seniors. 53% of Americans over 65 use the internet, according to research from the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Thirty-four percent of those are on social media, including Facebook.

No one watches more television than those over 65. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they work on it for almost four hours per day. People between the ages of 15 and 44 only watch TV for two hours every day.

People over 50 are the most likely to go to the movies in the United States. Thirty-three percent of all moviegoing is done by them. On average, adults over 65 go to the movies 7.3 times a year.

You Offer to Help
Nearly 50% of persons aged 65 and above volunteer in some capacity. Fifteen million people are contributing to their communities.

Nearly every senior has health insurance.
In total, 94% of people 65 and older are covered by Medicare, and 99% of seniors have insurance.
