Over the course of the three years covered by the study, those who reported higher levels of stress also tended to have a more pronounced deterioration in their functional health. Those who reported feeling younger had a lower correlation between stress and a decrease in functional health. Among the oldest individuals, this effect seemed to be the most pronounced.

The findings imply that assisting the elderly in experiencing a sense of youthful vitality may mitigate stress-related health issues as a result of this occurrence.
