  1. “Anytime you answered a phone, you had no idea who was calling you.”

A young woman, surrounded by pictures and messages on the wall, is lounging on a bed and using a corded phone. In her lap, she examines a photo album.

“Alternatively, if you called someone and they answered, there was no need to ask, ‘Where are you?'”

  1. “Paper maps.” Road trips felt more adventurous in those days, when you had to find your own way to your destination.

A guy and a lady are examining a map on an automobile’s bonnet.

The boss fight happened when the dumb items were folded back up.

  1. “Sexism is pervasive. When I got married, I was unable to even open a bank account.

“The same. In order for me to obtain a driver’s license, my husband had to sign.

  1. “Everywhere, dogs are urinating.” Dog excrement was not picked up by anyone. Additionally, there were pets that roamed freely, particularly dogs, which are now quite uncommon outside of rural areas. One or two neighborhood dogs that everyone knew by name were frequently seen straying around.

On a city sidewalk, a group of people—two ladies and one man—wear coats and hats while walking a number of little dogs.

“As I saw a man clean up after his dog the other day, I couldn’t help but think about the dog poop issue. When we were youngsters, it used to happen frequently, but I couldn’t recall the last time I had trodden in dog excrement.

  1. “As young children, we were completely unsupervised. My brother was four years old, and I recall looking after him alone for the entire summer while my parents were at work, starting at eight o’clock.

“Yes, and when my parents went grocery shopping, they would leave the four of us in the car. I’m not sure anymore, but it felt like they were gone for a while. At least long enough for everyone to be bold enough to run the wipers, honk the horn, and, if we were truly courageous, get out and run around the car in a circle.”

  1. “The Yellow Pages.”

  1. “Smoking in hospitals and on airplanes.”

Pete Townshend and Keith Moon sat in an airplane, both of them staring at the camera. Pete is wearing a dark coat, while Keith is carrying a cigarette.

“My high school had a smoking section. I recall thinking, “She smokes,” when a girl I had a major crush on returned from the smoking area. She is really tough.
