First, let’s look at the exterior. Your skin condition tells a lot about you. You may look older due to wrinkles, fine lines, and skin discoloration. Regular use of sunscreen is the one action you can take to maintain healthy skin and significantly improve your appearance.

According to Dr. Bohl, “Sunscreen reduces the risk of developing skin cancers later on as well as photoaging, which is the visible aging of the skin caused by UV damage.” However, there are numerous additional factors that might lessen the appearance of aging skin.

He advises sticking to a regular skincare practice to preserve healthy, youthful-looking skin, saying, “If you do the same skincare routine every morning and every evening, it starts to become second nature.” He continues, “This includes cleansing, using an antioxidant serum, and a moisturizer with SPF in the morning, and then cleansing, using a retinol or retinoid, and a heavy moisturizer in the evening.”

You can maintain proper posture as you age and make your body look younger by exercising. In addition to improving your function, adding aerobic activity, balance training, and flexibility training will make you feel and look younger.

According to Dr. Bohl, “Regularly engaging in physical activity can improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of falls—both of which contribute to adding years to your life.” Additionally, don’t let your busy schedule prevent you from exercising! According to Dr. Bohl, “Proper time management can help you fit in tips like getting enough exercise each week.”

Maintaining a “heart-healthy” diet is a significant step in extending your life. Avoiding processed foods and foods with added sugar is critically important. The solution is to eat a lot of plant-based foods.

According to Dr. Bohl, “If you find a diet you can stick to and are happy with, you don’t have to consciously think about it every day.” He further emphasizes that “monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats (sometimes called MUFAs and PUFAs) are particularly heart-healthy fats to include in the diet.”

Simply put, Dr. Bohl advises quitting smoking if you wish to live a longer, healthier life. While you’re at it, limit how much alcohol you consume.

It’s critical to adhere to the screening recommendations based on your age. Regular mammograms, pap smears, blood pressure and cholesterol checks, and colonoscopies are a few of these. Regular testing will enable your doctor to identify and treat any illness or condition early on, before it worsens. Your healthcare provider will advise you on what is required.

Don’t assume that your longevity is predetermined by your genetic makeup. As Dr. Bohl notes, “Yes, you may ‘defy genetics’ by leading a healthy lifestyle, though it’s not always 100%. You get what you get with certain genes. For instance, you can’t do much to alter the color of your eyes. However, other genes are more about your likelihood of experiencing a particular consequence or your likelihood of contracting a particular disease.

Eat well, stay active, and stay away from bad habits like smoking and not wearing sunscreen. Simply lead the healthiest lifestyle you can; genetics are not a given.

“There is some interesting research around supplements and medications people can take to live longer,” Dr. Bohl says, adding, “there isn’t a magic anti-aging pill as of yet.” Talk to your doctor about supplements and medications. However, drugs such as metformin, resveratrol, and rapamycin, as well as supplements like NAD+ precursors, may have anti-aging qualities and are being studied, so perhaps we will learn more about their benefits in the future.”

According to Dr. Bohl, self-care is not difficult. “Remain involved with the healthcare system,” he advises. Ask your provider whether there are any screens or interventions that are suggested for your age group when you go for your yearly physical. Remember to inquire every time, not just once, as the rules can change.
